The harmfulness of railway sleepers - fact or myth? Railway sleepers as hazardous waste

All wooden sleepers and most sleepers made of other materials is hazardous waste. Wooden sleepers are impregnated with highly toxic and carcinogenic substances chemicals to protect them from adverse weather conditions and prevent decay. Primers Railways therefore contain creosote, anthracene, fluorene or phenanthrene, benzo(a)anthracene and benzo(a)pyrene, which exhibit the following hazardous properties:

  • HP6 (acute toxicity),
  • HP11 (mutagenic effect),
  • HP14 (ecotoxicity).

Improperly managed (e.g. burnt, used in the garden, dumped in the environment) old railway sleepers cause contamination of soil and surface water and release toxic substances into the atmosphere and form smog. For this reason, the treatment, recovery and disposal of this waste outside specialised facilities and the transfer to individuals are strictly prohibited. Methods for the disposal of railway sleepers

The process for the disposal of railway sleepers (i.e. their final management) depends on the type of the sleepers and their classification. All creosote-treated wooden sleepers are treated as hazardous waste and transferred directly to specialised hazardous waste thermal treatment facilities, where they remain:

  • burned with recovery of electricity or heat (R-1 process),
  • incinerated without energy recovery (process D-10).

Thanks to the high temperatures prevailing in the furnaces of incineration and cement plants toxic substances are removed, so that the waste from the incineration process (ash) can then be used, for example, in the production of clinker. Wooden railway sleepers are also sometimes recycled by pyrolysis, during which a synthesis gas is produced and a carbon fraction used as fuel. Chemical-impregnated wood sleepers can also be disposed of by thermal extraction, which renders them unsafe and allows further use of the wood in other processes.
