Railway sleepers as hazardous waste<\/h2><p>All wooden sleepers and most sleepers made of other materials <strong>is hazardous waste<\/strong>. Wooden sleepers <strong>are impregnated with highly toxic and carcinogenic substances<\/strong> chemicals to protect them from adverse weather conditions and prevent decay. Primers <strong>Railways therefore contain creosote, anthracene, fluorene or phenanthrene, benzo(a)anthracene and benzo(a)pyrene<\/strong>, which exhibit the following hazardous properties:<\/p><ul><li>HP6 (acute toxicity),<\/li><li>HP11 (mutagenic effect),<\/li><li>HP14 (ecotoxicity).<\/li><\/ul><p>Improperly managed (e.g. burnt, used in the garden, dumped in the environment) old railway sleepers <strong>cause contamination of soil and surface water and release toxic substances into the atmosphere and form smog<\/strong>. For this reason, the treatment, recovery and disposal of this waste outside specialised facilities and the transfer to individuals are strictly prohibited. <strong>The best way to dispose of railway sleepers legally, safely for people and the environment, is to hand them over to a professional waste collection company such as Interzero<\/strong>.<\/p><h2>Methods for the disposal of railway sleepers<\/h2><p>The process for the disposal of railway sleepers (i.e. their final management) depends on the type of the sleepers and their classification. <strong>All creosote-treated wooden sleepers are treated as hazardous waste<\/strong> and transferred directly to specialised hazardous waste thermal treatment facilities, where they remain:<\/p><ul><li>burned with recovery of electricity or heat (R-1 process),<\/li><li>incinerated without energy recovery (process D-10).<\/li><\/ul><p>Thanks to the high temperatures prevailing in the furnaces of incineration and cement plants <strong>toxic substances are removed<\/strong>, so that the waste from the incineration process (ash) can then be used, for example, in the production of clinker. Wooden railway sleepers are also sometimes recycled <strong>by pyrolysis<\/strong>, during which a synthesis gas is produced and a carbon fraction used as fuel.
