What are the characteristics of mineral wool waste?
Mineral wool waste are included in the group of construction waste, i.e. generated by construction, renovation and dismantling activities.
Under the term 'mineral wool' there are 2 types of material:
- rock wool (made from basalt),
- glass wool (made from quartz sand and cullet).
However, this division is of little relevance when mineral wool becomes waste. Mineral wool from demolition or dismantling is usually contaminated - bonds irreversibly to components such as sandwich panels, plasterboard and fibreboard, must therefore be sent for disposal in a professional processing facility.
What waste code does mineral wool have?
Before ordering professional collection of stone wool, it is worthwhile not only estimating the amount of waste, but also assigning the appropriate code. In the waste catalogue, stone wool waste is classified under the code 17 06 04 - insulation materials other than those mentioned in 17 06 01 and 17 06 03. This information is particularly important for contractors generating construction waste, who are obliged to keep records of it in the BDO system.
Where to dispose of mineral wool?
Due to its properties, mineral wool may not end up in the municipal waste bin. Companies generating mineral wool waste should therefore provide a separate container or bin for glass wool residues.
- Small quantities of mineral wool waste (up to 1m³) can be discarded for the big bag.
- In the case of large quantities of residuals (e.g. from demolition work, thermal insulation of large buildings), a better choice is to hire a waste containerThe capacity of the container can be selected according to the volume of waste and the space available on site. We recommend the selection of closed containers, which will protect the mineral waste from getting wet and facilitate its subsequent sorting.
As a waste collection company, we offer both big bags and containers for glass wool. Each time the containers are full, we collect them and hand them over to a specialised plant for further disposal of the glass wool.
Where to dispose of non-business mineral wool? Individuals can also benefit from renting a container for construction waste or a big bag. What is important, some PSZOKs accept mineral wool waste. Before you decide to donate them to such a facility, confirm this information with the staff at the PSZOK or at the office of your municipality.
Is mineral wool recyclable?
Surprisingly, yes. Glass wool factories usually have an internal closed loop where the post-production waste from the wool (offcuts) is either returned to production or processed into granulate used, among other things, to insulate ventilated roofs.
The following are also suitable for recycling clean wool offcuts from construction sites. For this reason, companies producing uncontaminated mineral wool waste (e.g. from insulation of multi-pitched roofs, chimney insulation) can segregate it separately and then transfer it to a suitable installation. For this purpose it is worth ordering professional mineral wool collection - waste collection companies usually work with recyclers who are able to recycle wool waste.
Disposal of mineral wool - fast, professional and environmentally sound
arising from demolition or renovation of buildings mineral wool waste is mostly contaminated sand, cement, plastic residues and sandwich or plasterboard and are no longer recyclable. It is therefore necessary to dispose of them with the support of a waste collection company that transports the waste from the point of generation to the treatment facility.
Disposal of mineral wool takes place in several stages.
- Once the wool waste has been transported to the processing plant, it is disposed of (i.e. cleaned of various contaminants).
- The cleaned glass wool waste is then sent for storage.
- Storage usually takes place in special containers that prevent cotton wool waste from contaminating the environment.
What are the prices of mineral wool disposal?
Wool disposal price mineral depends on the volume of waste transferred, the type of waste (contaminated, clean), the size of the container and the location of the collection point and destination. In the case of building sites that are far from processing plants, transporting the mineral wool itself can be considerably more expensive than disposing of it at a processing plant. However, it is important to note that transporting mineral wool waste without the appropriate permit is prohibited.
Average cost of disposal of 1 m3 Mineral wool is around £200-500. To this price you have to add the cost of transport and hire of a container, bin or big bag (which in turn depends on its capacity and standing time). Please note, however, that the price list for mineral wool recycling services in large cities can be considerably higher!
